Day 12 - Quadra Island Boat Tour
We did a last minute booking for a small group boat tour of the islands around Quadra Island yesterday. We departed at 9:00 am this morning which involved a do it yourself breakfast and lots of layers of clothes. It ended up that the other couple didn't show up so there was just us and Devon the guide so we could go wherever we wanted. We let him pick the route and it was a fully open choice today. The wind speed was under 5 knots in our small 21 ft aluminum boat so we didn't have to worry about big waves and a bumpy ride.
The first stop was Mitlenatch Island Nature Provincial Park which has a huge population of seals.
We were heading to a little harbour on Cortez Island when Devon got a call that some Orcas were spotted near where we had departed from. The question was, do you want ot go on the planned tour or go see the Orcas... duh, we don't need a pit stop for an ice cream and pee.
He tracked down the pod of six Orcas and we spent about an hour watching them swim through the islands.
We were very careful to observe the 400m observation limit so no real close up and personal photos but I did the best I could with 300mm of lens.
After observing the Orcas we continued on a tour of the islands. An unforgettable experience.
We had a late lunch at the Heriot Bay Inn and went for a walk at the Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park.
We went to check out the Cape Mudge Lighthouse which is next door to our Lodge.
Time to relax after a busy day and we returned to our place for an early dinner than retired to our balcony to enjoy the boating action in the straight and the sunset and moonrise.
