Day 6 - Port Renfrew Area
Off today to check out a few places in the Port Renfrew area. Just down the road is another Provincial Park along the Juan de Luca Coastal Trail with hiking access to Botanical Beach. The feature of this beach is extensive tidal pools. Low tide was at 9:30 am so this is where we started our day's activities.
It was a short 1.5 km hiked down to the beach through some very dense forest. Once we got to the beach we were able to explore the sea life living in the various pools.
The weather was nice and sunny and warm when we got to the beach but after a while the wind picked up and some fog rolled in from the ocean.
We spent an hour or so walking the beach then returned to the trailhead. From here, we drove a bit inland to the Avatar Grove. A preserved old growth woodland with trails and walkways through the woods and some very big trees! Unfortunately, it was posted as closed due to environmental and public safety hazards but wasn't barricaded. We ventured in a bit on the two trails to have a look.
We drove past Fairy Lake and saw the famous lone tree on a log....
Mid afternoon we stopped at Bridgeman's Marina to check out the returning fishing charters. Everyone we saw seemed to have caught several large salmon.
We had a chance to sit in the sun and read for a while before heading back to the pub for supper.
We walked out on the fishing pier after dinner and there was an unusual foggy sunset developing. Unfortunately I only had my phone to capture a pic.
